ICAM Celebrating Iwa-ji (New Yam) festival 2005 - Women Dance
Celebrating Iwa-ji (New Yam) festival 2005.

The Nigerian Igbo community in the West Midlands celebrated their annual Iwa-ji (New Yam) festival in a cultural extravaganza.

Organised by Igbo Community Association in the Midlands (ICAM), the Iwa-ji annual event, now in its eleventh year. The African spectacular event draws people from all over the United Kingdom, bringing communities together in celebration of an important calendar event for Igbo people all over world.

Yam is the main agricultural crop of the Igbos and also the staple food of our people. The New Yam Festival known as Iwa-Ji or Iri-Ji is a celebration depicting the prominence of yam in the social-cultural life of our people.

Giving God thanks

During the festival we thank God for the arrival of the new harvest of yams and perform traditional rites to declare the new yam fit for general consumption.

It presents the right conditions for all and sundry, family and friends to come together and demonstrate their commitment and solidarity to the local community

The Igbos celebrate the new yam festival in a variety of ways and in some communities the festivities last the whole day and in many places it may stretch up to one week or even more. Iwa-ji is therefore an important event in the calendar of Igbo people all over the world.

Igbo tradition

Harvesting of this crop typically happens around the month of August, which is the time to give thanks to God for the new yam and to celebrate the tasting of the yam.

The event also marks the end of an annual work cycle and the beginning of a new one. This ceremony has been celebrated for centuries and remains an important day in the lives of Igbo people.

During the ceremony there is a lot of variety entertainment including performance of ceremonial rites by the Igwe (King), cultural dances by Igbo men, women and their children as well as a display of Igbo cultural activities in the form of contemporary shows, fashion parade, and feasting at a grand scale on a wide variety of food making up the menu of the Igbos.

There is a lot to eat and drink and attendance at the festival is from all over the United Kingdom and overseas.

The Igbos come from the eastern part of Nigeria in the West Coast of Africa and are one of the main Nigerian ethnic groups.

They occupy at least six out of the thirty six states in Nigeria today. The Igbo culture is rich and versatile and dates back many centuries.

The Igbo Community in Birmingham and the West Midlands has an estimated population of two thousand people.

The Igbo Community Association in the Midlands (ICAM) is a community organisation of all the Igbo’s resident in the West Midlands.

There's a new food/menu item I'm just hearing about-What are sliders?

Posted by admin on June 24th, 2009 and filed under New Food Menu | 3 Comments »

Everyone thinks of sliders as little hamburgers, and they can be, but they can be any amazing little sandwich. Here is a recipe for Steak Sliders, that are out of this world. Just remember everything is small, and if you are making hamburger sliders, make them special and put them on halved dinner rolls. Good luck! <3

Grilled Skirt Steak & Maytag Blue Cheese Sliders with Smoked Almond Romesco & Smoked Almond Butter
Chef Jennifer Wayland

Ingredients:

1 (1-lb.) skirt steak (or flank steak)
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
1/4 c. almond oil
2 T. lime juice
2 T. dry sherry
1 T. turbinado sugar (such as Sugar in the Raw)
1/2 shallot, diced
Smoked Almond Romesco, recipe below
Smoked Almond Butter, recipe below
1 egg white
1 t. water
1/2 c. sliced almonds, lightly toasted
18-21 mini brioche rolls (1 1/2-2 oz. each), or small dinner rolls
8-9 oz. piece Maytag Blue Cheese (or other blue cheese), crumbled

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350˚F. Preheat indoor or outdoor grill.

Season both sides of steak with salt and pepper. Place the steak in a shallow nonreactive dish. Stir together almond oil, lime juice, sherry, sugar and shallot together in a small bowl, and pour over steak; cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes. While steak is marinating, prepare the Smoked Almond Romesco and the Smoked Almond Butter.

Place the mini brioche (or small rolls, if using) on a large baking sheet. Whisk together the egg white and water in a small bowl, and brush on the tops. Sprinkle with sliced almonds, pressing to adhere; set aside.

Remove steak from marinade, and discard the marinade. Grill steak over high heat for about 3-4 minutes a side for medium-rare. Remove from heat, and rest 3-5 minutes.

Place mini brioche in oven, and bake for 2-3 minutes, or until warmed. To assemble sliders, slice brioche in half with serrated knife, and spread approximately 1 t. of Smoked Almond Butter on the bottom half of each brioche. Slice steak thin against the grain, and arrange evenly on the bottom halves of the brioche. Top the steak with crumbled blue cheese and then about 2 t. of Smoked Almond Romesco. Cover with brioche tops, and serve 3 sliders on each plate. Yield: 18-21 sliders.

Smoked Almond Romesco

Ingredients:

1 T. chopped dried ancho chilies
1/2 c. water
1 (8-oz.) jar roasted red peppers, drained
1 c. roasted tomatoes, drained
1/2 c. smoked almonds
2" piece day-old baguette
2 cloves garlic
Zest of 2 limes
2 t. smoked paprika
2 T. red wine vinegar
1 T. dry sherry
Salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Extra virgin olive oil, as needed

Preparation:

Place chilies in a small bowl; cover with hot water, and let stand 10-15 minutes or until softened. Drain.

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and process on medium-high speed until a thick sauce forms. If the sauce is too thick, thin with extra virgin olive oil (the sauce should not be runny).

Transfer to a small bowl; reserve for service. Makes approx 3 1/2 cups.

Smoked Almond Butter

Ingredients:

1 c. smoked almonds
Almond oil, as needed

Preparation:

Place smoked almonds in blender, and process on high speed until the almonds form a paste. If the butter is not smooth enough add almond oil until desired consistency is reached (butter should not be runny).

Transfer to a small bowl; reserve for service. Makes 1 cup.

What should I order from this vegetarian restaurant (menu included)?

Posted by admin on June 21st, 2009 and filed under Restaurant Menu | 7 Comments »

I do not eat eggs nor dairy. I am going there tomorrow for lunch. Help! Everything sounds good!

http://www.greensanantonio.com/menu.html
I hear its an eco-friendly diner with vegetarian-friendly comfort foods (not so health conscious). I want to splurge tomorrow.

Wow, so much looks yummy!

But my first instinct is to go for the chicken-fried wheat meat with mashed potatoes and fresh kale salad. That combo sounds really, really good.

The sesame chickin and mushroom stroganoff also sound good. Oooh, portabella steak! also with mashed potatoes and kale.

I can see why you're having trouble deciding.

Just ask them what's vegan.

And enjoy your lunch.
